In a recent earnings call, the Seattle-based carrier said the remaining 10 planes in its Airbus A321neo fleet will be retired by fall 2023. Alaska once had 72 Airbus aircraft after merging with Virgin America in 2018 and has already gotten rid of its A319 and A320ceo aircraft as of January 2023. With all of the Airbus planes gone, Alaska will only operate Boeing 737 jets in its mainline fleet.
JetBlue Airways has unveiled new perks for less-frequent flyers who are striving for elite status, the latest carrier to rethink its loyalty program to reflect shifting travel habits. Other changes include:JetBlue breaking up its elite Mosaic status into four levels, with benefits corresponding to each. To earn level 1 of that program travelers will need 50 tiles, and that comes with benefits like access to seats with extra legroom at check-in and same-day flight changes. JetBlue is also offering perks when a customer moves up a level of elite status like pet-fee waivers or a $99 credit card statement credit. American Airlines late last year, for example, raised the spending threshold required for customers to earn elite status.
Self-checkout machines at cafes, sports stadiums, and airports are asking people to tip — and customers aren't happy about giving their extra money to machines. A recent report from The Wall Street Journal noted the rise of digital, self-checkout kiosks hitting customers with a tip prompt at the end of their transactions. This prompt has frustrated people who are being asked to tip workers with whom they've had no interaction. "I was confused, because it wasn't entirely clear who I was tipping," he told the Journal, though he tipped 20% anyway. A spokesperson for OTG told the journal that all tip money collected is pooled and then paid out to the staff members working that particular shift.
A United Airlines flight from Newark to Tel Aviv turned back three hours after it took off. United Airlines told Insider that the plane turned back because of a "disruptive passenger." A spokesperson for United Airlines confirmed to Insider in an email that the flight returned to Newark due to a "disruptive passenger." Once the plane returned to Newark, passengers were disembarked and their trips were postponed. United Airlines said that a new flight was scheduled for Sunday evening so that passengers could make their way to Israel.
NEWARK, New Jersey — Faced with congested airports, rising costs, a pilot shortage and a resurgence in travel demand, airlines are increasingly turning to the same remedy: bigger planes that fit more passengers. In April, U.S. carriers have 0.6% more seats in their domestic schedules compared with the same month of 2019, despite operating 10.6% fewer flights. For example, United Airlines said its flights have 20 more seats per departure in its full network than in 2019. Early in the Covid pandemic, U.S. airlines reassigned their largest jets for domestic routes when international travel was hobbled by the crisis and travel restrictions. And, Cox noted, there are limits to how many flights the airline can upgauge, especially with its largest planes.
Daily flights between Newark and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport will drop to 10 from 18. Daily departures from New York LaGuardia Airport to Washington Dulles International Airport will decrease to six from nine. United could cut more flights beginning in June. Airlines have already cut about 10% of scheduled flights this spring to address performance issues, said trade group Airlines for America. Last summer air traffic control staffing was a factor in delays of 41,498 flights from New York airports, the FAA disclosed in March.
WASHINGTON, April 3 (Reuters) - American Airlines (AAL.O) said Monday it will join other major carriers in temporarily cutting some New York City area flights this summer after the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily relaxed some minimum flight requirements. Air travelers could face another rough summer as carriers struggle to meet burgeoning flight demands after the pandemic. The airline added "it is disappointing to reduce flights for customers as they plan their summer holidays and as New York City works to rebound from the pandemic." Airlines have already cut about 10% of scheduled flights this spring to address performance issues, said trade group Airlines for America. Last summer air traffic control staffing was a factor in delays of 41,498 flights from New York airports.
The FAA anticipates a 45% increase in flight delays at East Coast airports in the summer of 2023. The agency is blaming a post-pandemic shortage of air traffic controllers at key New York facilities. Airlines will be temporarily allowed to give up slots and times at airports in New York and DC. The agency expects overall delays in the New York region to increase 45% in the coming months compared to summer 2022, according to a recent press release. Last summer saw over 40,000 delays recorded at the New York area airports and the highest yearly percentage of delayed flights of the past seven years.
A grounds crew member directs an United Airlines airplane to a gate at Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in Newark, New Jersey, US, on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023. United Airlines shares fell about 6% in afterhours trading on Monday after the carrier forecast a first-quarter loss, citing weaker demand growth compared with other months and higher fuel costs. The carrier said as a result it trimmed its estimate for unit revenues to between 22% and 23% over a year earlier, down from previous guidance of a 25% increase. The airline said it still expects to earn between $10 and $12 a share this year, on an adjusted basis. The Chicago-based carrier is scheduled to present at a JP Morgan industry conference on Tuesday along with other airlines including Delta , American and JetBlue .
A commercial pilot told Insider that flight collisions and near-misses on the runway are rare. In recent months, at least five near-misses or plane collisions have occurred on airport runways. He said investigators need to figure out whether this is a coincidence or a larger issue. In 2023 alone, there have been at least five collisions or near-misses on airport runways, including incidents at JFK International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport. "It's honestly amazing to think how smoothly and little mistakes are made 99.99% of the time," Baumgardner said.
A JetBlue flight landing at a Massachusetts airport had a "close call" with a private jet, the FAA said. The JetBlue pilot had to take "evasive action" to avoid the private jet on the runway on Monday. "The pilot of the JetBlue aircraft took evasive action and initiated a climb-out as the Learjet crossed the intersection," said the FAA. Two weeks ago, FAA acting administrator Billy Nolen issued a "safety call to action" following recent near-catastrophic "close calls" on runways and other plane incidents. And in February, a landing FedEx plane in Texas had to pull up at the last minute to avoid landing on a Southwest flight that was headed to Cancun.

Passengers disembarking from international flights took anonymous Covid-19 tests for study purposes at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on Wednesday. A new offshoot of the Covid-19 Omicron variant is quickly taking over in parts of the U.S., especially in the Northeast, amid signs of rising infection numbers after the winter holidays. Virus experts and doctors say a combination of holiday gatherings and the arrival of the XBB. 1.5 subvariant is causing more Covid-19 infections, as reflected in rising hospitalization numbers and a recent climb in wastewater virus levels.
